I’ve sworn to bring the kids this year to at least one historic re-enactment, and this weekend offers a prime opportunity at the Sully Historic site in Chantilly, off Route 28. Here’s the info from FCPA:
War of 1812 Living History Weekend
In the Federal period, our new nation fought the second war for independence against England. Drill with troops at Sully Historic Site, watch the cannon firing and learn the role of horses in the military. Visit with the Ship’s Surgeon to find out about early 19th century medical practices. As you dance with our costumed interpreters to period tunes and play historic games, learn about the daily lives of civilians. Stop by the kitchen and see seasonal foods prepared, and at the slave quarter hear about chores on a large farm. House tour included. The cost of $7 per adult and $5 per senior or child includes a house tour. The program is offered 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. For information, call 703-437-1794.

Springfest at Fair Lakes
12450 Fair Lakes Circle (General Dynamics Shopping Lot) 1-4 p.m.
This year the theme is “green” environmental practices. The 2nd Annual family-friendly celebration includes a Whole Foods Market Fair Lakes’ free Children’s Farmer’s Market, Mini-Farmer’s Market, Cox Conserves on-site recycling station featuring Turtle Wings electronics recycling and Office Shredding paper shredding/recycling services. Kids activities include performers, petting zoo, jungle climb, face painters, balloon artist, moon bounce, green crafts and more. Free parking is available just next door at 12500 Fair Lakes Circle.

Bird Walk
Blandy Experimental Farm/Virginia State Arboretum in Boyce
Join the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy at 8 a.m. for a free bird walk at which all ages are welcome. Because of its rich and varied habitat, this is a birding hot spot. Please bring binoculars. Stream Monitoring Program Spring Kick-Off
Temple Hall Farm in Leesburg 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Join the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy as it kicks off its 2008 Stream Monitoring Program. We will present how monitors collect data on stream habitats and aquatic insects, as well as introduce our new nets and equipment that are fun and easy to handle. We will review the monitoring protocol, answer questions, and provide the hands-on training volunteers need to get started. No experience is needed to become a monitor, just an interest in learning about our local streams and their habitats. Bring boots or toe-covered shoes for wading in streams. Garden Sprouts: Tree-mendous Trees

Fish Face is coming to the library as an ArtsPower musical. The well known story addresses serious issues with a winningly light touch and the whole story sparkles with lively wit. Recommended for the family.
Natural Attractions: Frogs and Toads
Middleburg Library 1:30 p.m.
Alonso Abugattas, naturalist at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington, will bring live specimens of local species of frogs and toads and discuss their preferred natural habitat in this interactive program. For all ages.
Turtles, Snakes and Crafts, Oh My
