Lost in the sea of articles and press releases regarding the peanut butter product recalls is this recent one from The Associated Press via WTOP News online:
Giant Food has voluntarily recalled Simply Enjoy Chocolate Peanut Butter Dessert Sauce and Simply Enjoy Coffee Caramel Dessert Sauce because the products could be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening sickness or death.
How can anyone keep up with all these food recalls? I haven’t found a central clearinghouse for information, but if you know of one, let me know and I’ll pass it on. In the meantime, if I worry about a certain product, I’ll Google it. Here are some resources I know of for food recalls:
www.recalls.gov: A source for all types of federal recalls, with links to the FDA and Food Safety Inspection Service sites.
http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.html: The FDA’s list of current recalls, arranged by date. The FDA handles food and pet food.
http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fsis_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/: The FSIS site that lists current recalls for meat, poultry products and eggs.
You also can check for recalls of store brands and sign up for grocery store newsletters, which sometimes will note store brand recalls at the individual grocer’s sites:
