Talk Like a Pirate Day

Thirteen years ago, two guys playing raquetball came up with the idea of a national holiday where everyone would talk in pirate slang and that nationally syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry would be the spokesman. Lo and behold, Dave Barry wrote about the concept and thus, we have national Talk Like a Pirate Day on Sept. 19 every year.

Sounds too funny to be true? Visit http://www.talklikeapirate.com and read about it for yourself, as well as get tips on, you guessed it, how to talk like a pirate.

If you’ve got preschoolers ages 3 to 5 years, you can celebrate at the Herndon Fortnightly Library at 11 a.m. Friday at this free event: Talk Like a Pirate Storytime: Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day with stories about pirates, activities, and a craft. Call 703-437-8855 to reserve a space or for more info.
