Ooh, the current forecast calls for 88 degrees Sunday and Monday … if you’re in the Ashburn area and looking for a way to beat the heat, check out Java Jones Cafe, located in the office building at 20937 Ashburn Road, just a ways away from Ashburn Park (the one with the dinosaur-themed playsets) off Partlow Road.
The owner, Tim Jones, has rented the old Hawaiian Scoop space, kept the super premium Hawaiian ice cream (Lapperts), and added new favorites. Now you don’t have to travel to the islands for real Hawaiian shave ice, which has a finer shave than your typical Sno Cone and thus retains the flavorings mo’ bettah, as they say in pidgin. For a traditional version, try the shave ice with vanilla ice cream and azuki beans. Also high on the yumminess scale is the Dole soft serve ice cream, in five fruit flavors plus vanilla, although they only offer two at a time.
I’m more hopeful that Java Jones will stay in business because unlike Hawaiian Scoop, their other menu offerings appeal year-round: espresso from a spankin’ new machine, Kona coffee (25% Kona beans), pastries and cookies from Uptown Bakery in DC, and salads, sandwiches and wraps for heartier appetites. Jones retained the former ice cream shop’s casual, tropical decor and has added two wall-mounted TVs and Wifi to complete the cafe’s appeal.
It’s a perfect stop before or after taking the kids to play at Ashburn Park, or as a stop along the O&D trail, and Jones is friendly and happy to offer tastings of the Dole soft serve, which you probably haven’t tasted before if you haven’t visited the plantation.
