DC area weekend family events

If you feel like getting out of town this weekend, there are several options for entertainment in DC and Baltimore:



SAAM I Am – Chalk Festival
Smithsonian American Art Museum
F Street Entrance, Sidewalk
2-5 pm Thursday and Friday; Noon-5 pm Friday  FREE
Join us on the sidewalk outside the museums F Street entrance for three days of creative chalk art. Spend Thursday and Friday sketching the afternoon away, but save your best ideas for Saturdays festival, which will begin with a reading of A Piece of Chalk by Jennifer A. Ericsson. Musical performances throughout the day will help inspire everyone. Adults and kids are welcome.

Your Family History “Snapshot
Anacostia Community Museum

Join historian Maria Goodwin and museum staff member Robert Hall and create your own family history “snapshot” at the Smithsonian’s African American history museum. Bring in five items — small objects, historic documents, photographs, yearbooks, certificates, and other items — with which to research and develop your family’s history around people and events.Free, but reservations required; call 202-633-4844

ImaginAsia Family Program: Royal Family Albums
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
1050 Independence Avenue, SW
Sackler classroom, Sublevel 2
2 pm Saturday FREE
For ages 8-14 with adult. Take a close look at the exquisite layouts and design of pages from the royal albums compiled for the great Mughal emperors Jahahgir and his son Shah Jahan, builder of the Taj Mahal, in the related exhibition. Then return to the classroom and use handmade papers to construct an album page in the Mughal style. Bring a 4 x 6″ or 5 x 7″ full-length portrait or group photograph. Free; first come, first served.


Bubble Days
Maryland Science Center, Inner Harbor
Noon-4 pm Saturday and Sunday
Join us for the Maryland Science Center’s 4th Annual Bubble Days. The fun will be bubbling up all over the building-and outside too as we celebrate the art and science of bubbles. Our feature event is internationally famous bubble artist Casey Carle who performs his bubbly brand of humor and artistry in BUBBLEMANIA. We promise you’ll be amazed at what Casey can do with seemingly ordinary soap bubbles. Peformances on our Atrium Stage at Noon, 2 and 4 pm. Other activities throughout the day are make your own bubble wrap art, bubble factory, bubble gum blowing contest, bubble workshops and more.   1. I was at the zoo in DC July 6th. Sad. I could not beleive the areas. The tiger (I only saw one) was pacing as was the (again one) elephant. The elephant was in a rather small area with a small pool. Mostly he paced. There are wonderful zoos in this country. Our NATIONAL Zoo is not one of them.
