Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22 … Here are a bunch of NoVa, DC and MD activities to celebrate:

Earth Day Clean-up

National Zoo           
Saturday, April 19      9-11 a.m.   FREE

The Zoo and FONZ invite you to celebrate Year of the Frog and Earth Day at a cleanup of Rock Creek, near Amazonia. Help us remove debris from Rock Creek’s banks and keep the surrounding ecosystem healthy. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the grassy picnic area across from Amazonia. We encourage you to save natural resources and take Metro to the Zoo. If you drive, park in Lot D. Wear durable shoes (sandals are not recommended) and be prepared for uneven terrain during the clean up. Protect yourself against insects, plants, and the sun with long sleeves and pants. Also, be sure to bring work gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The minimum age is six years old. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The clean-up will be held rain or shine.

SMALL changes can make a BIG impact

Saturday, April 19  and Sunday, April 20    10 a.m.-3 p.m.
 Explore what you can do to save our blue planet- starting with your own backyard- and meet Tyrone, star of Nickelodeon’s hit TV show The Backyardigans! Receive a free photo with Tyrone, Saturday: 10am-Noon or Sunday: 10am-1pm. Plus, dive-in to a special Party for the Planet with animal presentations and activities, face painting and meet local animal inhabitants like the wood frog. Free with price of admisssion.

Jr. Naturalists – Going Green

Monday, April 21   2:30-3:30 p.m.

Children ages 8 to 11 are invited to plant a small tree in  the tree nursery from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Watch it grow and take it home to plant in your yard in the fall. Learn how to BE GREEN. Reservations are required. The cost is $4 per child. To reserve, call 703-631-0013.

Children’s Day Celebration

Hidden Oaks Nature Center

Celebrate National Week of the Child and Earth Day at  from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Enjoy live entertainment, games, crafts and demonstrations of activities celebrating children from around the world. Join the grand opening of our “green” parking lot, rain garden and butterfly garden. Reservations are required. This program is suitable for children ages 3 to 12 with an adult. Celebrate Earth Day!

Animals, plants, air, water, and humans are all pieces that together make up the puzzle that is the Earth. Explore stations designed to interactively teach about the importance of nature, our affect on nature, and recycling, through crafts, games, and more. Solve one mystery to get a clue for the next station, and pick up a puzzle piece to create your own planet Earth! Allow yourself enough time to complete the activities by 4 p.m.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.
