Kid activities this week

It’s going to be gorgeous this week, according to the current forecast! Here are some outdoor activities, as well as some indoor ones, to keep the kiddies occupied…

Thursday, April 17

Garden Sprouts: Amazing Ants
Green Spring Gardens,  Alexandria   9:30-10:30 a.m., 11 a.m.-Noon.
Make your own antennae, shrink yourself to the size of an ant and find your way through the tall grass to our picnic basket at. For children ages 3 to 5 with an adult. Cost is $5 per child. For information and to register, call 703-642-5173.

Nature Detectives – Frogs and Toads
Huntley Meadows Visitor Center   10-10:45 a.m.
Through a story, activity and crafts at  children ages three to five will learn more about these fascinating animals. Reservations are required. The cost is $5 per child. To reserve, call 703-768-2525.

It’s Lego Time @ the Library!
Centreville Regional Library   4:30-6 p.m.
Bring your own Legos to the library to build with or you may borrow ours. After everyone has created their Lego masterpiece, participants will judge the creations. Age 8-12.

Family Movie Night
Ashburn Library   7 p.m.
Bring your pillows and blanket to get comfy for an evening of 101 Dalmations (rated G)! Don’t forget your favorite snacks, too.  Recommended for all ages.

Friday, April 18

Celebrate National Library Week with A Whale of a Tale!
Ashburn Library   3:30 p.m.
Enjoy the extremely exaggerated antics of Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill and other larger-than-life legends. Then create your own colorful character and “tall” snack! Recommended for ages 7-10. Register online or or call 703-737-8100.

Ponderings – Arboreal Animals
Hidden Pond Nature Center    4-5:30 p.m.
The  naturalist shows folks the animals that call the treetops, tree limbs and trunks home. He will even climb a tree in search of the camouflaged gray tree frog. Reservations are required. The cost is $4 per person. To reserve, call 703-451-9588.

Game On.
Patrick Henry Library, Vienna  6 p.m.
Runescape, DDR, Wii, pizza and soda at the library. Age 10-18. No registration is required.

Riverside Campfire – Raptors
Riverbend Park  6 :30-7:30 p.m.
Meet Emmylou, ’s resident red-tailed hawk, and explore the world of raptors. S’mores provided. Come early if you want to bring a picnic or toast hotdogs. Bring a toasting stick, blanket and flashlight. Prepaid reservations are required. The cost is $3 per person. To reserve, call 703-759-9018.

Nature Night Hike
Lake Accotink Park   8:30-10 p.m.
Join us for a nighttime hike over wooded terrain as we try to encounter some of the “nightlife.”  Participants will learn about nocturnal activities of forest residents. Dress for the weather. Meet at the park’s Visitors Center. Adults bring a flashlight. The hike is appropriate for children ages seven and older. The cost is $5 per adult and $3 for children under 16.
