Out of town

From GoCityKids DC, two free DC events worth the trip into the capital:

Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) 50th Birthday Celebration
10 a.m.- 3 p.m.
Celebrate FONZ’s rich history with a family-friendly party and special animal programs, including free cupcakes and ice cream for the first 1,000 visitors; party games such as Flamingo Ring Toss, Bowling Armadillos, and Frog Fling, fun party hats to wear; and a giant birthday card on which guests can write birthday wishes. The games and activities take place from 10am to noon in the Picnic Pavilion, at the lower end of the Zoo across from Lion/Tiger Hill. In addition, from 11am to 3pm staff and volunteers host special animal demonstrations, feedings, trainings, and keeper talks throughout the Zoo.

Library of Congress Experience
11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Celebrate the opening of the new interactive Library of Congress Experience with the formal opening of the bronze doors and exhibits, music and entertainment – including Cathy Fink and Marcie Marxer, face painting and finger painting, PBS characters, a write-your-own story activity, presentations featuring Library programs such as the Veterans History Project, and the designation of several new Living Legends from many walks of life.
