Weekend Lineup

With the  40 percent chance of snow/ice pellets on Saturday, I’m looking at indoor activities for the kids, but Sunday is looking clear so it’s a tossup: in or out?   


Paint Your Own Mug!
11 a.m., Herndon Fortnightly Library

Sherlock Bones
1-3 p.m., Huntley Meadows Visitor Center
Skulls, skeletons and self-guided activities will be set up in the classroom at  at this free children’s program. Call 703-768-2525.

Garden Sprouts: Miss Spider’s Tea
10-11 a.m., Green Spring Gardens
Get out the cups and saucers, set the table and enjoy some “tea” and treats with Miss Spider and all her friends at . The cost is $5 per child. For kids ages 3-5. Call 703-642-5173.

Lovettsville Library’s 18th Birthday Celebration

11 a.m.: Hop to It!
With Alonso Abugattas. Hop on over to learn all you ever wanted to know about frogs, toads and their relatives. Experience some real encounters of the amphibious kind!
2 p.m.: Hot Jazz with The Woodshedders
Come and listen to the Acoustic Gypsy Jazz of The Woodshedders, as they fuse nostalgia and invention, improvisation and tradition. A number of unique original songs and compositions round out their repertoire of gypsy folk songs, waltzes, swing and olde tyme jazz standards.

Raise the Rafters – Musical Camera Safari
2-3 p.m. Frying Pan Farm Park’s Visitor Center
Children ages 6 and older are invited to explore barnyard sounds with an interactive game from . Then guess the mysterious animal’s identity while listening to live music that mimics an animal’s size, movement and sounds. This free presentation by the string trio Strings-N-Things is based on “The Carnival of the Animals.” Call 703-437-9101.

Game Day
2-4 p.m., Frying Pan Farm Park
Before television and movies, people would get together to talk, play and socialize over a game board. Revisit the fun as you enjoy Dominoes, Backgammon, Monopoly and Parcheesi at the Visitor Center. Call 703-437-9101.

Bluebird Monitoring Program Orientation
10 a.m.-Noon, Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Leesburg
Nicole Hamilton, Loudoun County coordinator for the Virginia Bluebird Society, will provide an orientation on nestbox monitoring and the protocol used here in Loudoun for collecting and reporting data. She will give an overview of the program, discuss the current trails being monitoredaround Loudoun, and take us through a slide show about bluebirds, their nesting habits and habitat needs, and preferred foods. Tips on gardening for bluebirds will be discussed as well as the use of natural cavities and nestboxes. A typical nestbox system with predator guards will be set up for demonstration. Those interested in joining a monitoring team for the 2008 season can sign up during the meeting. Those interested in monitoring a home nestbox or trail and providing data to LWC can register their trails/boxes during the meeting as well.
