The day started out gorgeous (63 degrees, woo hoo!) and the kids were throwing themselves at each other ninja-style in the living room, so we needed an activity that would bleed off that energy. While the Virtuous (and Frugal) Mom in me wanted to go Mount Vernon, which offered free admission in honor of Washington’s birthday, I shuddered at the mental picture of my hyperactive kids crashing into an exhibit with, say, our founding father’s false teeth.
So the zoo, with its steep hills guaranteed to take the wind out of any kid’s sails, it was. Many of the concessions were closed, so we didn’t get the usual free popcorn and cookies with our FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo) membership pins, but the kids got their fill of fur, fins and feathers before the rain started in the early afternoon.
